Hi, I have an HP Pavilion Gaming laptop with: 16GB RAM, Intel Core i7-10750H at 2.60GHz and a nVidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q graphics card. I am having trouble because my CPU is always too hot and the fans are spinning all the time. This started right after I restarted my laptop. It happened weeks ago, but recently my screen just showed a Windows notification saying it needed a force restart (it was too fast to read properly). After that forced restart, my laptop was much quieter. I was running games like WoW and Hearthstone at the same time and my CPU temperature dropped nicely down to about 75°C. Now I had to restart my laptop because of a driver install, but after it started overheating again, the fans just kicked up immediately and the CPU stays around 90 degrees hot all the time. The CPU is using only 1% to 5% while the temp hits 90°C. My computer was cleaned recently and I put new thermal paste in. The PC guy checked everything inside and said it looks fine. Everything was good thirty minutes ago, but after the restart the CPU temps just won't go down lower. I guess something is doing this process somehow.

The first picture shows how the CPU gets used up when it's very hot. The second picture shows what happens when it reaches 100 degrees Celsius. I can't send pictures because they get flagged as spam. Here is Picture One and Picture Two: Edit: I turned off the Windows Update service from services.msc. Looking at Task Manager, if Windows Update is running at the top of your list, maybe that's why things went wrong?

It looks like the program tried to move the window all the way to the top to find which app used the most CPU, but somehow cleared out or reset that info. It's probably a glitch in how Windows is working right now.

My pictures show a list of tasks, ordered by how important they are. A nearby store actually wipes down my computer's heat pastes often enough. But I don't think that's the real problem here.

Does the task manager show 1 core running at full speed while others are idle, or does it list every single core with 0% activity?

Was your laptop acting weird before? Maybe that's why a repair person worked on it. Usually, people forget to take things apart when cleaning a laptop. They leave the thin silver metal fan back plate and the black tape that covers it alone. Inside is where the heatsink sits so the fan can blow air through it to let heat out of the machine. It gets completely blocked by hair and dust. You have to take it apart to see it clearly.

I don't have a perfect core like this picture shows. In my post, I said my CPU only uses 1% to 5% power (all cores stay at similar temps). My laptop is clean—no bad paste, no fan failing, no dust. While playing WoW and Hearthstone with 10 Chrome tabs, music, and Discord, my CPUs stayed around 70°C. After a simple restart, the temps jumped up to about 90°C without me doing anything else.
