My computer is back on, but it's making a loud noise right now!
So basically, I had some trouble with my graphics card. I unplugged everything and took out the CPU, GPU, power cables to the motherboard, CMOS chip, and hard drive. When I put it all back together and turned on the PC right away, after showing up on the screen, my headphones started making a humming noise. I tried three different ones—two new pairs and one old pair—and they all had the exact same problem. No matter which green audio jack I used (front or back), the hum started immediately. Even if I just wanted to use the mic instead of the speakers, the pink headphone jack wouldn't work at all. This is the first time in over five years that my PC has ever made this weird sound like that. Any help would be really appreciated.
i had a few problems with my graphics card and i unplugged everything, took out the processor and the gpu, cut off the power cables to the board, cleared the CMOS, and wiped the hard drive. when i posted this request for help about troubleshooting, it is normal to share all your computer details. please list them exactly like this so i can see what you have: CPU: cooler: motherboard: ram: storage (ssd or hdd): graphics card: power supply: case: operating system: monitor: headphones: include the age of your power supply aside from its make and model number, as well as the version of the BIOS on your motherboard right now. soon when i plugged in the green jack, whether it is front or back, it starts making a loud humming noise. even if i wanted to use only the mic (the pink one), nothing comes through. you might want to try reinstalling your audio drivers, but first make sure that your front panel connections are correct. moved this thread from the Components section to the Systems section.
My Ryzen 7 5800X has a great cooler but it never gets hot enough. My setup includes a B450M DS3H motherboard with 16GB DDR4 RAM running at 3000MHz, a 500W power supply, an RX 580 GPU, and some storage like NVMe drives and HDDs. I have a Logitech headset too. Sorry if the full list was missing from this post. I tried updating my drivers but nothing helped. Even checking both front and back audio ports gives me the same result. The only thing that works is the USB panel on the motherboard, even though it uses the same chip as the audio.
If something wasn't already connected, maybe a wire is touching something it shouldn't. Even if the mic input isn't working at all, maybe parts of your audio system got damaged when you took apart your PC. You could plug in an external USB audio interface or DAC/sound card to stop internal signal interference. There are pretty cheap ones out there that should work just fine.
Analog audio is always at risk of getting disturbed. As ThereAndBackAgain mentioned, there are many cheap USB Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) choices available right now. For instance, even starting as low as $10: UGREEN USB to 3.5mm Jack Audio Adapter USB Sound Card This USB to TRRS combination can give everything you need for a headset using a combo jack: If you need separate connections.. An adapter like the one shown above is also available: UGREEN Headphone Splitter 3.5mm 2 Female to 1 Male Mic and Audio Y Splitter TRRS Headset Adapter Cable On the other hand, if you want something more fancy for your desktop, you could move up to something like the JDS Labs - Atom DAC 2 (only line level outputs) and pair it with a separate microphone, such as the Antlion Modmic Uni 2 or another USB microphone.
