While on vacation, I purchased a game for $20 on Steam, paid the fee, and later faced unexpected charges on August 20th. When I tried to dispute the charge through my bank, Steam blocked me because they warned that disputing would lock my account. They informed me it was a double charge and promised a refund after ten business days. Since the refund hadn’t arrived by August 22nd, I contacted their support, explaining the situation. They advised me to wait until my bank processed the dispute before challenging it. Eventually, the refund came, but now Steam has restricted my account for nine weeks due to the unresolved charge. They mentioned that if the dispute is reversed, the restriction will be lifted. I reached out to them again about removing this lock, but haven’t received a reply yet. I’m concerned someone might be holding my account as ransom until I pay $20. What should I do next?

I don’t rely on Steam because of issues like that. Origin is preferable for customer support, plus they offer free games. What was the game about, and are there many titles available on Steam?

As a fifteen-year-old, the $20 plus the $15 overdraft charge feels really heavy. I don’t want to waste time searching for ways to fix it.

You discover an important lesson about patience. There was no need to reach out to your cc company since Valve had simply stopped processing the payment. Now, they’ve canceled the second payment, which likely means you canceled the first one too. Reach out to Steam support, explain the situation, mention the confusion, and contact the cc company while staying calm.

I voided the second payment issued this month, not the one from July. Appreciate your guidance.

Listen to Valve when they mention "disputes will lock your account." When they promised to send the double charge inquiry to the payment provider, they referred to THEIR PAYMENT PROVIDER—like a bank or merchant service such as Moneris. They didn’t mean your bank. It’s likely they could have been clearer and emphasized that disputes will block your account. My approach would be: 1. Return to your bank and cancel the dispute. 2. Reach out to Valve again, confirming you’ve done so. 3. Ask them about their expected timeline for reversing the double charge. I experienced some issues before with Steam, but it was a system glitch that resolved itself automatically—this doesn’t guarantee the same outcome for everyone. In short: contact Valve and stay persistent until they fix it.

Your bank might not refund the $15 overdraft charge—they shouldn’t, because you didn’t expect the money and it was mistakenly deducted. In most cases, they’ll simply cancel the fee.
