I’ve been thinking about a possible upgrade, but financial constraints mean it might not happen soon—perhaps in Q3 at most. Could the M.2 5.0 offer the same speed as PCIe Gen 5.0 x4? If yes, are there adapters from U.2 to M.2 Gen 5? (Technically Gen 4 will function similarly, but I’m very precise.) Should PCIe 5.0 x4 be faster, would you need a splitter for PCIe 5.0 x16 to x4 so I don’t lose the 12 lanes? It doesn’t really matter if it splits into x8 plus 2x4 or just 4x4, as long as there’s x4 support. If it doesn’t have a U.2 to Gen 5 adapter yet, I’ll revisit this later. I should also mention that I’m attempting to fit an Intel Optane P5800X into the Asus ROG Maximus Z690 Extreme. If the P5800X already comes with a PCIe Gen 4x4 adapter, I don’t need to mention it again.

It seems you're questioning why someone would consider a $1200 motherboard when alternatives exist. Many are drawn to such products because they often have major flaws, like taking PCIe lanes from your GPU when using M.2 slots—a design mistake that’s widely criticized. Replacing it with something like the Rapter Lake adapter around then would likely be unnecessary. For guidance, you can explore U.2 to M.2 adapter cards; some even claim support for PCIe 4.0 on eBay, though you’ll need to verify their reliability yourself.

Starting with what you asked for, the main reason I chose version 2 over 1.2 was the need to remove an x16 slot. Regarding the other question (m.2 5 versus PCIe 5 x4), it wasn’t really about build advice—it’s still under development. The focus was more on fitting this component, which probably won’t change anytime soon, or even with Meteor Lake. I’m considering a few boards to review later, so I mentioned an “upmarket model” like the ASUS Z690 Extreme. Thanks for your thoughts on that!

Didn’t Intel stop Optane? I might be confusing the details, but I believed they did over a year ago now. Here’s the link: https://www.techradar.com/news/intel-has...it-quickly intel killed its consumer optane drives January 2021

It's not about paying for builds or similar things. It's mainly about dealing with a fairly typical problem—taking time to earn money—which is why I should have been clearer. My error was there.

Don’t believe it https://www.newegg.com/intel-800gb-optan...6820167484 They eliminated the other Optane models, not the p5800x. Updated March 9, 2022 by Alder Lake

This model is similar to the 900P but the P5800X remains in stock at Newegg.
