Hello. Considering an upgrade to the main machine reveals the CPU is handling too much load. Numerous browsers and tabs (over 300) plus multiple programs running simultaneously are causing delays. The system has 64GB RAM at around 43% use, but it’s reaching 90% on the CPU, leading to noticeable slowdowns. This was a mid-range build, so I installed an MSI MPG x570 Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 5 3600x. Now I’m evaluating the 5900X and 5950X, wondering if the MOBA’s performance issues would impact CPU speed. I’ve confirmed compatibility with the 5950X via a BIOS upgrade, but I’m questioning whether the CPU is the main constraint. If the MOBA becomes a significant bottleneck, upgrading to a threadripper model might be more practical. It seems threadripper CPUs are likely the future standard...? I understand this topic often comes up, but most details about MOBA bottlenecks are less direct than what I’ve seen before. Appreciate any guidance you can offer.
I believe you meant Mobo, which refers to a motherboard. A Moba is a type of Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and it's definitely not a computer component.
The X570 gaming plus might manage a 5950X, though it won't feel very comfortable. Hardware Unboxed discovered the X570 Gaming Edge rivals VRM-overheat issues with a PBOed 3900X. You don’t have to splurge on premium parts—options like B550-A Pro or B550 TUF for about $150 would make a noticeable difference. The MSI X570 line seems underwhelming. Threadripper isn’t essential unless you have a specific need.
Thanks for the feedback on the mobO problem. I secured a "good" offer on a 5950x, which is $150 over MSRP, so I’m proceeding right away since speed matters. I plan to check out a Threadripper for my next system in a couple of years, possibly aiming for multiple desktops, and this board should serve me well for some time. The Gamers Nexus video gave a solid overview of my setup; they noted around 22:10 that VRM could have issues with 16 cores and suggested creative cooling solutions if needed. I’ve been using the stock fans, but I’ll explore fan/liquid cooling options and the market for those boards. Thanks again.
I believe you can find the motherboard VRM Tier List at the beginning of the forum. It will provide a clear understanding of which boards suit which CPU base on their VRM. You should choose something from Tier A and above. For me, I recommend the Gigabute X570 Aorus Pro (with or without WiFi). It offers solid VRM performance. Although it’s quite basic with only two M2 slots, it provides decent IO and a solid VRM heatsink. There’s also an PCIe x4 slot at the bottom, allowing you to connect a PCI-E add-in card safely without interfering with your NVMe ports, since it’s dedicated. I’m not certain about its current price, but before the pandemic it was reasonably priced, averaging around USD 259. Of course, if you prefer a higher-end board or have more budget, there are better options available.
