MSI MAG342CQR for Windows 11 with HDR display.
Hi, I purchased an MSI MAG342CQR monitor a while back. I prefer 144Hz and thought HDR would work decently. I was aware it wouldn’t be the best, but not as disappointing as it turned out. The issue is that after turning on Windows 11’s HDR setting, the OSD locks all monitor settings except sharpness, making the display look very faded. I attempted HDR color calibration, but I can’t achieve a viewable image for gaming or general use. I’m not sure if there’s something wrong with my setup. I don’t expect an exceptional HDR experience, but I also want something acceptable for casual viewing. Perhaps I’m using the wrong settings? Thanks for your feedback and please correct any mistakes—I’m not a native speaker.
This display falls short of even the basic HDR 400 standards. Even if it met those requirements, most models struggle to render HDR effectively. In reality, they only recognize an HDR signal but fail to show it accurately. This issue is frequent in budget and mid-range screens. It's typical for HDR to restrict nearly all settings on compatible monitors. Captures taken with HDR enabled appear true to spec. Viewing them in standard resolution will result in over-sharpened images. Ultimately, poor HDR performance makes it worse than regular SDR. For such devices, turning off HDR is usually the best choice.
It seems you were unsure about the correct choice. I should have been more thoughtful when selecting the monitor. Wishing you a wonderful day!
