I just received the MSI Z590 MGP Carbon gaming Wi-Fi motherboard, which claims compatibility with 11th and 10th generation CPUs. My goal was the Core i9-12900K (12th gen), but I’m unsure if it will work. Would I need to choose a lower model like the 11900K instead? I have limited knowledge about motherboards, so I’m not sure if updates would be possible.
This MOBO isn't compatible with the 12th series, so you might not be able to use it.
Unfortunately, it wouldn't work. The 12th and 13th generation chips have a different socket compared to the 11th generation.
They are two entirely different connectors, making it impossible to fit a 12900K into that board. Using a 12900K isn't feasible; you'd need to sell the board and purchase something else. Considering the current market price for used 11700Ks and 11900Ks, it's better to sell the board and upgrade to a B660/Z690 model for a 13600K or higher.
I don't have a clear answer to that. The motherboard you mentioned supports DDR5, but whether it also supports DDR4 depends on the specific model and configuration. You should check the official specifications for the MSI MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI DDR5 LGA 1700 Intel Z690 SATA 6Gb/s ATX Intel Motherboard.
It's clear that DDR5 boards aren't compatible with DDR4, mostly just what they claim.
