I believed the initial M.2 port and PCIe slot acted as CPU lanes, adjusting to the PCIe bandwidth the processor could use.
It's affordable but only a bit more, allowing me to obtain a significantly better board. I won't rely on as many features, but it's all Gen4 instead of whatever confusion this is. It shouldn't be chipset dependent because the first slot and M.2 slot are directly connected to the CPU. This must be due to some artificial BIOS restriction—probably a strange tweak in the BIOS to artificially cap speeds for a reason. Odd. I'll upgrade to the nicer board and grumble about missing out on half the capabilities.
I wasn't sure, but I was considering how things like A520 motherboards might include CPU connectors while still being Gen 3. It's not uncommon for boards to have a different chipset than listed, especially with unusual combinations like this.
