MSI B365M Mortar fails to display (stable red CPU EZ Debug LED), receives power, but lacks SMD capacitor.
I recently acquired a used CPU, motherboard, and RAM package. It includes an i5-9400f, MSI B365M Mortar, and some standard SK Hynix 2x8GB RAM modules. I put everything together with my GPU and power supply, turned on the power, but nothing happened. There were no fans spinning, not even the EZ Debug lights. Even after removing all components from the motherboard, I still didn’t see any sign of activity. After further investigation, I discovered a missing SMD capacitor on the underside of the CPU. While it shouldn’t be a big problem, I’m unsure why it matters so much. I found a replacement near my workspace, but it wasn’t from the CPU—it was from the motherboard, specifically the chipset side. I’m not certain about its importance, but it could explain the lack of response. I experimented with some unusual methods: inserting the CPU in 24-pin mode and shorting the power switch pins, which briefly revived the system when fans and lights started working. However, the display remained blank, and the EZ Debug LED stayed a steady red. Whenever I power on the PSU without touching the power switch, the same issue persists. I’ve tried clearing CMOS, reseating all parts, and rechecking connections, but nothing changed. The LED stays red, and I’m left with no solution. I’m hoping someone can help me figure this out.
