I monitor temperatures and CPU/GPU usage with MSI Afterburner, but not for overclocking. About two weeks ago, The Witcher 3 wouldn’t launch. I thought closing MSI Afterburner would help since it was the only new tool I was using. Once The Witcher 3 started running, I could open it again. Eventually, most games stopped launching when MSI Afterburner was active. Even though there were no updates to MSI-A, a few days later they stopped working for some titles. I reinstalled MSI-A but didn’t see any improvement. Many people mention only a few games failing to launch under those conditions. Do you know anyone who has dealt with this issue?

I might remove MSI Afterburner and reinstall the GPU drivers. After that, I'll reinstall MSI Afterburner once more and check if the problems persist.

It occurs because of the Riva tuner statistic server. The same issue will arise if you attempt to run a superposition benchmark using DX12 mode. With those games, overlaying is not possible. I only turn off the afterburner when playing Doom or Quake Champions; it doesn't influence the selected profile (overclocking or fan curves) since they are already set on the GPU when the afterburner starts.

n0ns3rs:
this occurs because of the riva tuner statistic server. the same applies if you attempt to run a superposition benchmark in DX12 mode.
with these games, overlaying is not possible or at least I don't understand how.
I simply disable the afterburner when playing doom or quake champions. turning it off doesn't change the selected profile (overclocking or fan curves) because they are already set to run on the GPU when afterburner starts.
just uncheck the rivatuner option during installation. it seems this feature is only available for users with two monitors, as you can open Afterburner on another screen to monitor temperatures.

I would attempt to remove MSI Afterburner and reinstall your GPU drivers. Then reinstall MSI Afterburner once more and observe if the problems persist.
I tried it, but I believe I should retry since uninstalling MSI-A doesn't fully remove RivaTuner. Perhaps a fresh installation is needed. So far, no resolution.
I looked in Control Panel - Programs and Features. The graphics driver install date was 10/10/2017. ... Yet I saw on a Steam forum that this issue started around the 9th of October 2017.

Other users mentioned similar issues related to the Riva tuner statistics server. They noted that launching the superposition benchmark in DX12 mode would cause the same problem, making overlay impossible. They also shared that closing the afterburner affects only the selected profile settings, not overclocking or fan curves, which were already loaded to the GPU when afterburner started. One suggested disabling the Riva tuner option during installation, possibly because it works best with two monitors—allowing them to monitor temperatures on another screen. The discussion also included a note that Eternal Champion recommended against using RiverTuner, though they later considered it might be related to GPU usage stats.

No, I don't recommend avoiding or disabling the Riva Tuner. I actually prefer to use it occasionally. However, some games won't start, and in those cases, the overlay from the Riva Tuner can't appear. Therefore, just close the afterburner when playing those games.

I never figured out the issue. But it seemed to fix itself. It could have been a driver update or a Steam update.
