MSI 6800xt experiences green screen issues and unexpected VGA light activation.
I have recently purchased a Radeon RX 6800 XT MSI GAMING X TRIO 16G I believe it's causing me random Green screen crashes forcing the pc to restart itself. Followed by a bipolar VGA light sometimes deciding to be on my motherboard when I boot my pc and sometimes deciding to be off, but when it is on it doesn't affect my pc it works as normal, until it green screen crashe. The card is about a year old I just bought it a few weeks ago secondhand off marketplace (claimed that it wasn't used for mining), I originally thought it might be the motherboard ( ASUS ROG Strix B550-F ) but realized none of these issues happened whilst using my 1660ti prior to owning the 6800xt, I even tried using a 3060 I had laying in another rig and no VGA light or crashes after stress tests. I know it shouldn't be my PSU as it's THERMALTAKE TOUGHPOWER GF1 750W Gold , (I do use cable extenders for aesthetics but doubt that is the cause as I used them for the other cards). My GPU isn't currently over-clocked either however, when overclocking I noticed the green screen crashes are more frequent. I also cleaned and inspected the PCI-E slot and the card itself for any dust or gunk, this didn't fix my problem. I purchased a better quality GPU support bracket as I thought maybe the stock one isn't effectively holding the thicc card in its slot. But even after buying a after-market GPU support, both green screen crashes and random boots with the VGA light staying idle were occurring. I've updated bios, chipset and drivers as well uninstalling any GPU drivers I'm not using. Even going so far to use DDU or whatever it's called to fresh uninstall and reinstalling my AMD drivers. I can't claim warranty as not the original invoice owner please help me ya boi is despracito in need of help and out of options x
Check if your card supports the newest BIOS updates. https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?man...RX+6800+XT
Don't always rely on the seller's statements, as they might be dishonest. They could be intentionally misleading to recover their investment.
Check if the GPU works on another computer. Someone is listing a 6800XT after the mining boom, saying it wasn't mined for that purpose. They claim their 5700XT has been played a lot of PUBG over the past three years, yet people doubt it wasn't mined. I wouldn't be surprised either.
I could, but it would be a big mess since the other PC I built for selling is all set up to buy. I’m pretty sure it’s the GPU, unless we put it in a different rig it might give us more clues. Yes, I was very careful when buying a second-hand GPU, but you should have noticed the card had very little dust. The seller said he used it for video rendering on a workstation. There’s some truth, though—he might actually be good at cleaning his GPU when reselling his mining cards.
Testing the card on another PC helps determine if the issue lies with the GPU. The errors should match the card's behavior. If it functions on the second machine, focus on troubleshooting the first one.
I've experimented a bit and I'm pretty sure it's the GPU that caused the issue. When I installed the 3060 in my PC, everything seemed fine—no VGA light flickering and smooth operation with 3Dmark. However, when I switched it back to VGA light during boot, I noticed random green screen crashes. I double-checked the PCI cables for orientation and found nothing loose or damaged. My PC specs came up around 600 to 650 watts on various PSU calculators. I'm still stuck and running out of ideas, but I think it might just be me getting discouraged from troubleshooting lately. Let me know if you have any suggestions that could help!
