moving an OEM license
moving an OEM license
hi. my laptop had a Oem windows 10 when i bought it which i upgraded to 11 a while ago. there is a problem with GPU which dont switch correctly unless i replug AC and i tried different ways like uninstal or upgrade but it didn't work. one time i took out ssd and replace it with a raw one and installed new windows 11. and problem was gone. now i want to upgrade ssd as well but i Don't know how to take the license from 1st ssd and use it on 2nd one .... i remember last Time i tried, windows was not active.
If you just swap out the hard drive, everything works fine. But if you replace the processor or the mainboard, your original license won't work automatically anymore (though you might still find a way to fix this).
The OEM license key comes with the computer when you buy it. Each version has its own code on the hard drive. This key is connected to your motherboard. If you replace the old SSD and put the same Windows OS on it, Windows will activate automatically according to what Google says. But why didn't my computer activate on its own? Do I need to install a different edition first like 10 Home Edition and then upgrade to 11? Or is it fine to just start with 11 Home Edition directly? Also, do I have to connect to the internet to finish this process? If yes, what should I do next? Like opening up a specific setting or running some commands... I don't know how to start.
If 11 shows up on your screen then go ahead and press it in. You need a working internet connection right now just to finish this step, but you don't have to be online when you first start. Windows will do its own thing later if you get an internet connection at some point. Also, remember that the special key comes from the computer's BIOS chip inside your machine, not from the hard drive.
To start up correctly, your computer has to talk to an internet server so it can check if the code on it works. Usually, the system figures out this thing by itself and lets you know if there is any trouble right away.
thank you. it looks like the edition I picked before caused a problem. after reinstalling win 10 home edition, windows was active when i clicked on the troubleshooting icon. anyway, i was going to pick my best guess but i think i won't be able to finish the process later. someone told there are ways to transfer an OEM license. could you please tell me how?
Moving a software license only happens when the computer changes completely, like going from one machine to another with a new board. Since you kept the same PC but swapped out the hard drive for an SSD, nothing actually moved. It's just a fresh start without transferring anything.
I know I couldn't figure it out. He told us there are tricks to get an OEM key. So, what's the best way?
