Moved from Intel to AMD
Moved from Intel to AMD
hello forum, i'm facing a challenge. last christmas I got an asus rog strix h370-f gaming board with a core i3-9100f. lately, my pc isn't performing well for gaming, especially apex legends. i thought switching to an amd board would help since the 6-core cpus are cheaper. but my current board is great, and i don't want to downgrade. i'm not rich, so should i sell my mobo or is there another option? i checked intel, but the first 6-core model costs around 200 euros, which isn't great. what should i do? also, i have a gtx 1060 with 3gb ram and 16gb of memory.
Sell your board and CPU to receive a Ryzen 5 3600 and a B450 board.
Determine the right selling price for your components. A Corsair V550 PSU may be sufficient depending on your system's needs. Consider starting with a first-gen Ryzen 7 or upgrading to a second-gen model if required.
It depends on the other parts you have; I don't think you'll have enough for a 3600 and a B450. It's better to wait a month and get a 3300x and a B550 board instead, which will be much cheaper.
Before starting, run the game on a monitor to observe CPU and GPU usage. Look at the percentages and see which programs are consuming resources. I checked your specs and believe your CPU should handle Apex well. Also found some YouTube videos showing good FPS with your CPU, though the game relies more on GPU.
Your system appears fairly balanced with both CPU and GPU at similar performance levels, and you're seeing a decent frame rate. If you notice stuttering or frequent frame drops, upgrading the CPU might be a good idea. Bypassing GPU limitations is straightforward—just tweak settings or resolution—but a CPU constraint can be more challenging to resolve. Apex benefits from its multiple cores, though a Ryzen 5 1600AF might not be ideal if your budget is extremely limited, as it could struggle with single-threaded titles. Your current power supply should handle most 65W CPUs, unless it's non-standard. The 1600AF typically costs around 100EUR. If possible, consider a 3300X for 120EUR unless your games require more than four cores.
The 3 generation Ryzen isn’t available in the Netherlands, so I’ll have to wait. Would a Ryzen 7 2700 or a Ryzen 5 with six cores be a smart choice paired with an older RTX 2060? With the funds I have now and the current prices, that seems like a viable option.
For a 3600 budget, consider swapping some CPU power for a stronger GPU if possible. The choice really depends on the games you enjoy and how much they rely on CPU versus GPU performance. A 3600 works well with a 2060 and can support upgrading to a more powerful GPU later, whereas a 3300 might hit similar limits as your 9100.
