If a motherboard claims i5 compatibility with an i3, i5, and i7, it suggests broad support across multiple generations.

Check the socket details carefully; only compatible CPUs fit the same socket type. Recently, Intel's cross-generation support has been limited. For instance, an LGA1151 100 board won't work with an LGA1151 300 CPU. It might be better to verify the chipset compatibility instead of focusing solely on the socket.

Your i5 9400F uses a 1151 socket, and if the motherboard supports 1151 CPUs, it means it can work with any CPU that fits that socket type.

Ensure you verify the chipset and confirm if the board is intended for an OEM system.

It's better to find the model number on the motherboard and check the manufacturer's site for that specific model. Even if a chipset works with certain components, you might lack the correct BIOS for that CPU.
