You recently purchased an i7 8700k to swap out your i5 6500, which clearly meant you also needed to upgrade your motherboard. It's true that when installing a new motherboard, you often have to install a Windows installation disk to reinstall the operating system.

Windows may request a fresh activation key again. Previously, I contacted Microsoft explaining that my MOBO was offline and they restored it, but I’m unsure if this approach will continue to succeed.

Which option you choose depends on whether the process needs an activation key or works with a duplicate HDD.

You retain your Windows copy, but a new installation is advised for the updated system.

Thank you for letting me know. It wasn't my doing to install the new parts—I'm just a bit nervous. Appreciate the information!

Does your key come from an OEM source and is connected to your MS account?
