Motherboard B550 What to pick
I’m weighing the options between three B550 motherboards: MSI B550 Gaming Plus, Asus ROG Strix B550-A, and ASRock B550 Steel Legend. They’re all similar in price nearby. Should I stick with the latest AM5 or the Intel equivalent (LGA 1700), which is more affordable right now? I’m also considering pairing it with a 3070 and have previously used 3600 or 5500 models.
A few notes: 1) The 5500 model is quite outdated—don’t go after it. The 3600 is a better choice. Same applies to 5600G and 5700 non-X variants. 2) If you’re purchasing now, the 5600T is worth considering (though AMD uses T here, not Intel’s). It’s more affordable than the 5600 or 5600X. Regarding boards, any B550 works as long as it supports PCIe 4 and has sufficient back-side I/O. As for AM4 versus AM5, the price will likely depend on the specific model.
Country? Budget? Purpose? Considering a 100$+ new b550 is a significant oversight, suggesting optimization could make it work. However, imagining the ultimate b550—whether as a gaming or unify x model—could handle DDR4 5000 with ease, thanks to its scalability and improved vsoc support. Expect around 5200+ with strong vsoc settings, though this remains untested. For the 3600, it’s about 4.6-4.8ghz DDR4, while a top overclocked 3600 might reach ~4.6ghz on DDR3 3800. The b550 should outperform the 3600 due to better IPC and faster RAM compensating for cache limitations. The unify x seems compatible with 4dimmer Aorus Pro Master boards, and a DDR4 6000 variant is available in older or lower-quality builds that struggle beyond 4.4ghz.
