I rely on Bitdefender Free AV http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/solutions/free.html It runs smoothly with no intrusive ads or popups, unlike what others have said. I previously used MSE (Windows Defender on Windows 8) but it didn’t catch ZeroDay threats or malware. Now I regularly test my pendrive and hard drives on both my notebook and desktop PC.

Used AVG for a long time, now back to it after switching back. Norton Internet Security isn’t working well, so I’m planning to get the full version soon.

Norton works perfectly when you need to download something and it was helpful because I secured a plan that lets me install it on multiple devices, including PCs and Macs, so I can share it with my parents.

Technically Windows 8.1 includes a pre-installed version of MSSE, but does that matter? I haven't used antivirus software since around 2009. I still run SAS/MWB occasionally, though they usually only detect minor issues.
