So I used a program called TestDisk, and I thought I messed something up. Actually, I tried an option that said my hard drive is gone or missing. Anyway, since two days ago when I turned on my computer, half the time in the Disk Management menu it just says "new volume." I clicked and assigned the D drive to it. Why does this happen? Can I make the system remember D as a real drive instead of keeping saying "new volume" most of the time after I turn the PC off?

Have you looked at the drive? A hard disk sensor like HDS Sentinel, for example, can help. You could also try a mini tool called Partition Wizard to see how the files are organized on the drive. Both links point to the same download page where these tools are available.
