Most games experience frequent crashes during initial builds.
Recently I assembled my initial computer and was quite pleased with its speed until heavy gaming caused frequent crashes and occasional blue screens. I’m feeling quite upset about the overall experience, especially considering the expense involved. I spent a lot of time reading troubleshooting guides but still couldn’t get it to run smoothly. Here are my specifications: motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X RAM: Kingston Fury beast 2x8GB DDR4-3200 SSDs: First, the old SSD from a previous build (very limited capacity), then a new Crucial BX500 1TB SSD GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 3070 Gaming OC 8G power supply: 750W Gigabyte 80+ Gold All temperatures stayed below 70 degrees during assembly. When I built the PC, I installed all the necessary drivers and tried various fixes, but nothing resolved the issues. Games tested: Just Cause 4, Watch Dogs, Fortnite, Dota 2, Cyberpunk, CS:GO, Enter the Gungeon, none crashed except under heavy load. Since heavy games consistently failed, I’m convinced the GPU is the problem. My concern is whether Windows might be the issue—I recently moved the old drive into the new one without reinstalling it, but I’m unsure how that affects things. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m really stressed about the cost.
First, check if any components in your setup are boosted. Next, confirm the temperature of your CPU. I understand thermal performance is acceptable, but for clarity, let's discuss cooling options. There was a case where a friend experienced an issue after exiting a game, linked to cooling. Regarding crashes, they seem to occur either immediately after starting the game or right after launching it. If GPU is suspected, consider having someone test your graphics card. A faulty GPU would likely show symptoms there as well. If you lack testing resources, a VRAM check could help. Alternatively, you might try manually reducing GPU speed using MSI Afterburner to help identify the cause.
Initially nothing was overclocked and I even attempted to slow down the GPU, but that didn’t resolve the issue. First of all, my CPU has a solid cooler with good airflow in the case. When it crashes, it seems to happen randomly—Cyberpunk after 5-10 minutes, GTA 5 after an hour or so, and Dota 2 usually after about 15 minutes, though sometimes it can take up to 30 minutes. The only consistent pattern is GPU-intensive games crashing sooner than others. I plan to run a VRAM test once to check if that’s the cause, as it might help me figure things out. Thanks!
