European nations have long complained about the dominance of US and GAFA companies in public services, recalling my own experience with French-made PCs in the early 80s. However, they haven’t made much progress, and it’s unclear if this will ever reach a meaningful level.

I really hope it’s large enough to significantly impact MS and force them to change their position. But honestly, it seems like just a small drop compared to the bigger picture—maybe even less important than the lake. Sadly.

Guten Tag, ihr beiden – ich glaube, dass noch mehr Länder folgen dem Beispiel von Open-Source-Software in öffentlichen Einrichtungen. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-Sourc...richtungen

This likely signifies that currentyear++ will mark the Year of the Linux Desktop. It's comparable to store-brand cereal being just as good as Kellogg's. LibreOffice is fully prepared to replace Office 2003 as a drop-in solution.

It's a chicken-and-egg situation. More PCs using Linux will boost SW development, but big firms hesitate to invest without a solid user base. Without enough fully-featured software, adoption remains tough. Most existing SW works reasonably well for everyday needs, though it can't fully replace Windows in every case. People often compare Linux to Windows by focusing on what it lacks, but they usually don’t realize Linux already excels in many areas.

The EU required FOSS adoption long back. No nation seriously embraced the shift. In today’s US political environment, moving away from American ICT tools is gaining momentum. The reality is, most EU governments are tied to lengthy agreements with suppliers that push Win-OS. Only when these deals expire do governments find affordable options to switch to FOSS providers. Breaking a contract usually means paying the full amount regardless.

They seem to have a solid chance now of forming a solid strategy.

They frequently overlooked things, but Lyon’s leadership includes ecologists and far-left advocates, which makes me less confident about expecting a bigger shift.

Libre Office plus NextCloud offers a solid choice. It stands out since Microsoft packs O365 full of AI features, making Libre Office faster, more targeted, and more secure. A point to note is support—people new to these deals often overlook it. Your Office 365 plan includes extensive support, but Microsoft manages SharePoint, not your team. To really make this work, an EU firm would need to create Libre Office installers/updates, handle NextCloud subscriptions, and provide both services. Random locations won’t want to hire many sysadmins just for sharing presentations.
