I'm currently borrowing a friend's computer while they're away, (so I'm in a bit of a bind, please help 😭) and after starting a game I just downloaded, I realized it was stuttering a lot. Even though the hardware seems capable and I haven't changed anything, the performance dropped significantly. After a short while, the screen turned grey and stopped responding.
Alt+Tab and Ctrl+Alt+Del didn’t help, so I powered off the PC by pressing the power button. Since then, every time I turn it back on, the monitor shows "no signal," even though the CPU and GPU fans are running and everything appears normal. I’m unsure if the system is starting properly because the motherboard lacks a speaker to produce beep codes.
I think the problem might lie with the PC itself (likely the power supply unit or GPU), since when I connected a laptop to the monitor, everything worked perfectly. Also, changing the HDMI cable or unplugging it seems to make a difference. I’ve tried several fixes:
- Using a different HDMI cable
- Connecting the cable directly to the motherboard instead of the GPU
- Disconnecting all external devices and restarting
- Re-seating RAM and GPU
- Reseating the CMOS battery
- Replacing the main motherboard and CPU cables
- Cleaning components with compressed air (the GPU was quite dusty)
What I haven’t managed to resolve.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
a friend's computer
We're going to need a little more info. Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model.
When I unplug or plug-in the HDMI cable to the PC, the monitor changes its status from standby to "no signal, so the monitor clearly detects *something* from the PC...
Not really, it just means that the system isn't outputting video.
Connecting the HDMI cable to the motherboard rather than GPU
If the motherboard doesn't have a soldered on GPU or the processor doesn't have an iGPU, you won't get display out of those ports.
