Modifying the CPU in an older retail setup (NCR RealPOS 70XRT)
Looking for a CPU upgrade for this setup since it’s time for an improvement. I’ve increased RAM from 4GB to 8GB, added a 2TB SSD for booting and a 20GB SSD for temporary files. The system runs a mobile-style CPU with a laptop-compatible socket—not a ball-type one. The internal components are quite intriguing, but compatibility is the main challenge. I’m not sure where else to turn for advice (the NCR subreddit and POS communities didn’t help much). I hope I’ve shared enough details about the hardware. Please send me pictures of the socket when it’s not in use, like when it’s used as a Plex/file server. Thanks a lot!
I received it without cost, and I was hoping to test its usability. It functions well with Plex after major improvements, so adding a Linux distribution might be a good idea. Of course, this is still in the early days of Windows 7 embedded.
I think the top choice would be a Q9000 chip, available on eBay for about $20. It should offer smoother performance thanks to its dual-core design, though the clock speed of such an older architecture will also play a role. If you manage to overclock the stock voltage to something more practical like 2.6-3GHz, you'll see significant improvement.
I’m considering a boost in performance and wondering what steps to take. Unfortunately, the Intel Extreme series doesn’t seem to be compatible right now.
Throttlestop seems like a solid initial choice. Run a high-intensity stress test (P95, OCCT, IBT) and gradually increase the clock speed if possible. If Throttlestop isn’t an option, there don’t appear to be other alternatives known.
