I’m evaluating an upgrade to a Ryzen 7 3700X and ASRock B450M MOBO. My current setup includes an AMD A10-7850k, a GeForce 980 Ti, and some stock MOBO. PC-build warns I’ll hit a 100% CPU bottleneck if I replace my CPU while keeping the GPU. Based on that, should I opt for a Ryzen 5 3600X instead? Either choice will keep me stuck until I upgrade the graphics card. My main tasks are Blender rendering and HD gaming.
Avoid relying on generic calculators. For Blender, pairing a 3700x with a 980Ti works well. Consider an MSI B450 board such as the A-Pro Max, Gaming Plus Max, or Tomahawk Max—they offer stronger VRMs, better multithreading support, and come with the right BIOS for the 3000 series.
Get the eight-core CPU. For Blender, having more cores helps. The 980 Ti offers great CUDA performance. Right now your A10 is slowing down the 980 Ti significantly. If you want higher FPS later, you can upgrade the GPU then, but for now I recommend keeping the 980 Ti.
Thanks for the feedback. @LukeSavenije I’m considering an ASRock setup while keeping my current MOBO in mind. I’m leaning toward the MSI B450Tomahawk Max paired with the Ryzen 3700X.
If you locate the best ATX or gaming plus max ATX for lower cost, I suggest choosing that option. Power delivery remains consistent across all three, and the Tomahawk features a marginally improved heatsink on top. Due to its widespread use, prices for the Tomahawk have risen significantly.
