You're looking to refresh your Intel Core i5 9400F with a faster CPU while staying within a £200–£300 budget. Your ASUS PRIME B365M-A board is a solid platform, but you’ll want to ensure the new CPU is compatible and offers better performance for your needs. Consider options like the Intel Core i5-10400 or i5-11400 series, which provide noticeable speed improvements without breaking the bank. Check compatibility with your motherboard model and look for good value in terms of both price and future-proofing.

Intel needs to move on. You can find the last-gen AMD options at a lower price. Don't forget to use the included cooler—PCPartPicker Part List. CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-core (£123 at Amazon UK). Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 GAMING X V2 ATX AM4 (£99.99 @ AWD-IT). RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 (£78.99 @ Ebuyer). Overall: £301.98. Shipping, taxes, and discounts are included. Created by PCPartPicker on 2024-01-31 16:31 GMT+0000

The motherboard adds some challenges since it lacks VRMs and doesn't support top-tier unlocked chips effectively. The best 9th-gen CPU that would run smoothly without performance limits is an i7-9700, which unless you opt for a cheaper version, isn't significantly better than what you currently have. Your budget also feels tight when considering both the motherboard and CPU upgrades. I’d hold off a bit longer and save up for a more recent platform upgrade. If you’re eager, at least a basic AM4 rebuild would be the bare minimum.

I intended to convey the same idea, but using pricing in the UK appears significantly more advantageous than in the US. I planned to suggest moving to an AM4 setup where RAM stays, but it seems you can purchase an i7 8700K for just £125 on eBay currently, which is a reasonable amount given it eliminates the need for a new motherboard. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166495920819?...Z&LH_BIN=1 In the US, the same chip costs over $200, meaning you could upgrade your whole system with a Ryzen 5 5600 and a B550 board for less than the i7 price, making the UK option equally sensible.

The performance alone could make the upgrade worthwhile. You’re considering staying with your current setup rather than switching to AMD or replacing RAM, and you’re open to upgrading the motherboard if necessary. Your concern about restrictions is valid, so addressing that would help.

The optimal option I can suggest is to wait an additional month and increase your budget by another hundred pounds. This way you’ll receive:
PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor (£189.00 @ Computer Orbit)
Motherboard: ASRock B650M-HDV/M.2 Micro ATX AM5 (£105.47 @ NeoComputers)
Memory: ADATA XPG Lancer Blade 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 (£104.99 @ Ebuyer)
Total: £399.46
Prices cover shipping, taxes, and any available discounts.

If you prefer, you might maintain your existing RAM and simply upgrade the CPU or motherboard.
In 2024, 16GB RAM is still sufficient for gaming, whether you’re playing at 1080p or 1440p resolution.

These items could work well together. I understand basic hardware concepts, so the upgrade seems reasonable.

I'm struggling to locate a suitable LGA 1200 board and the cost would jump significantly if I chose a 12400 CPU. It feels like I'm stuck trying to keep expenses under £400. Would switching to an AMD option with a Ryzen 7 be a better path? Maybe this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Ryzen-5800X...1b6e3d217f also works.

I’m not sure about compatibility, but I appreciate the help. Thanks for your time!

Sure, I'm planning to purchase a Ryzen 7 and enhance its performance.
