I’m just getting started with PC gaming and bought a used system with an i5-6500 MSI B150 motherboard, 16GB RAM, G.Skill RipJaw 2, 500GB SSD, and Nvidia GTX1070. It’s working fine for VR right now. You’re thinking about running DCS World in VR and wondering if it’s worth upgrading to an i7-770K or saving for a better CPU/MOBI board combo.

I wouldn't put money into an outdated setup. Of course the 7700K still has some edge, but you'll likely hit CPU limits before reaching far distances. I recommend sticking with an i5 for as long as you can, and look for a 3600/X model on sale. An AM4 socket (commonly used for Ryzen chips) will bring in the next-gen, which AMD claims offers improved single-thread performance to narrow the gap between Intel and AMD in gaming. Personally I own an i7 6700 (non-K) that's sitting idle; I might upgrade it to an 1650S and pass it along.

It's tough to defend a price of 6700 or 7700 given the steep costs, but Ryzen offers great value for upgrades.

I prefer Intel chips and won’t change my mind, even if AMD offers a better option. For upgrading VR flight simulation, what path would work best?

It's a more affordable CPU option now. The used 7700 will cost less than the Ryzen+Mobo+RAM combo.
