Modern Internet Router Connectivity solution for today's needs
Outside is likely just a telecom box of some sort. Your gateway is for DSL or you can use it with any Ethernet based WAN. Judging by your speeds Im going to say your on some sort of vDSL service. So the outside box is where the connection between ISP cabling goes in to your houses cabling. I have a similar thing on my home, Comcast coax comes in to the box where its grounded and connects in to my homes wiring. WIth Fiber, there is a separate box thats a media converter. Its job is to convert the Fiber in to something the user can use, like Ethernet or Coax. Though sometimes ISP's issue Media converter/router combs. I know AT&T does. Your first step is checking to see how your current setup is wired. Is the connection from the wall going in to the DSL port or in to the WAN port. That tells you a lot about your connection. Ether way this is the box thats causing WiFi issues.
We have a fibre connection but don’t require the highest speeds. To be sure, I’ve shared pictures this time. There’s an external cable entry outside my house, followed by another side with a blue Ethernet cable leading to it—possibly the issue. (Is this the modem?) It connects through the WAN port. A friend lent me a spare one (modem?) so I can check if that’s the cause. (It’s a Linkseys WRT1900ACS. Thanks for your help.)
Then any router should suffice. Search for something supporting the AC wireless standard or newer. Keep in mind your gadgets will also require AC wireless cards to benefit from this feature. It's strange to have a fiber link paired with slow upload speeds—this is usually for DSL or Cable internet.
Most of the devices in my home are equipped with Wi-Fi. (My personal computer is the only one I built myself, and I installed an AC Wi-Fi card.) Sure, the connections aren’t very fast, but we don’t really rely on high-speed internet. Also, costs rise quickly after 100 Mbps. Fiber optic networks are still new in my area, and most of New Zealand hasn’t adopted them yet...
