Modern home network setup
Modern home network setup
Hey there, I'm having some issues figuring this out since I'm not really familiar with network tech. I'm trying to set up a basic starter system, but the internet in Australia seems really slow right now. I have a modem from my local provider, an Asus Gt11000 router, and an Asus Xt4 mini mesh system. From what I know, I just need a good switch and some Ethernet cables to get things working.
I don't know much about the Xt4, but it might not require connecting to the main router if Asus offers a wireless backhaul that links everything together... The mesh concept means they don't need cables running to every device, but if they aren't compatible with the Gt11000, you may have to connect one of them at least. Looking quickly, it seems the Xt4 is likely a router already, so the Gt11000 isn't necessary. Placing the mesh system behind the router would be counterproductive.
Both devices support AiMesh, allowing you to connect them into a single large network. What region are you aiming to cover? Since Ligistx noted both units function as routers, you likely only need one unless you require extensive coverage.
Planned to use the GT11000 as a dedicated router for my computer and the mesh for the main Wi-Fi throughout the house. Even then I had no idea how to set it up. I tried, but the whole system crashed and I had to reset everything. My modem is also a router, so I switched it into bridge mode and connected an Ethernet line from it to the GT11000. I configured the GT11000 as an access point, and the XT4 mesh was set up as my Wi-Fi network (with the main unit linked via Ethernet to the bridged modem). Of course, everything failed and my mood took a hit.
Checked out Asus' Aimesh setup. Used gt11000 as the router and Xt4 as the nodes.
I refined the drawing to reflect my original plan. I also noted that I switched the modem to bridged mode, set the gt11000 to AP mode, but it rejected those changes. It wasn’t able to reach the ISP or ASUS router settings page for either device, and the GT11000 couldn’t connect to the internet.
The ISP model should operate in bridge mode, but you must configure the GT11000 in router mode. If it's set to AP mode, it won't function properly. Based on your understanding, keep the ISP mode as bridge and change the GT11000 to router mode. Configure Asus AImesh network using Xt4 nodes connected to the GT11000. You can link the switch to the GT11000 to connect the devices you wish to link via wired connections.
I'll try it, thanks! Appreciate the effort. Not very familiar with all this tech stuff.
