I’m planning to construct a budget-friendly server with ECC protection. From what I’ve learned, for optimal defense against data corruption (such as bit flips), you should use a system that employs "Registered" (or buffered) ECC RAM. I don’t need to debate whether it’s necessary; I just want to focus on the details. As far as I understand, there are four main types of RAM: 1. Non-ECC - Unbuffered 2. Non-ECC - Registered (buffered) 3. ECC - Unbuffered 4. ECC - Registered (buffered). For the system to benefit from Registered (Buffered) ECC RAM, both the motherboard (and chipset) and the CPU must support it. Therefore, the challenge is that Intel’s website mentions ECC support but doesn’t clarify whether it includes Registered (buffered) variants. Specifically for the CPUs and chipsets I’m considering: - Intel Core i38100T (6M Cache, 3.10 GHz) - Intel Core i38300T (8M Cache, 3.20 GHz) - Intel Core i39100T (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz) - Intel Core i39300T (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz) - Intel Xeon E31235L v5 (8M Cache, 2.00 GHz) - Intel Xeon E31565L v5 (8M Cache, 2.50 GHz) - Intel Xeon E31585L v5 (8M Cache, 3.00 GHz) - Intel Core i312100T (12M Cache, up to 4.10 GHz) - Intel C246 and W680 chipsets. What’s the issue? It seems Intel might be leaving out details about Registered (buffered) ECC support. I’m wondering if they assume that ECC support implies Registered ECC, or if Registered ECC is not covered. Is it common today to have all ECC RAMs registered? My support chat with an Intel representative has been going back and forth, but they’ve kept repeating that ECC is supported without specifying buffered options.

In my understanding, registered and unbuffered ECC memory share similar error detection and correction capabilities. Most budget chipsets such as 1200 or 1700 lack support for registered memory. A practical way to verify is by examining the board's RAM specifications, which indicate memory limits rather than CPU or chipset details. If you need registered ECC, the best choices are Xeon D, socket 2011, 2011-3,3647, or EPYC systems.

The buffer supports dimmers with greater capacity. You can register 256GB dimmers but only 32GB without a buffer. There seem to be no chips featuring built-in RAM and quicksync. My recommendation is the i3 model with unbuffered RAM, paired with a server or workstation board.

It's unclear why Intel made that change—it seems unusual. From a CPU standpoint, you likely won’t need much power, so any recent i3 should suffice. However, the 12th generation chips feature improved hardware encoders and decoders in their GPUs, which could be beneficial.

That's a good point. I just can't find any motherboards that support ECC. Most online stores don't have filters for that which is a bit annoying

In fact, using the filters for LGA1700 and ECC support on the PC parts picker yields no matches. Perhaps I should consider C246 boards and an i3-9100T instead.
