Modem and Router setup
Hi Taj, you're considering the Netgear CM1100 modem and XR450 router for your upgrade. Since you're on a budget and enjoy gaming, these two options seem reasonable. Wi-Fi 6 can offer better performance in crowded networks, which might benefit your gaming experience. The QoS feature on the XR450 could also help manage bandwidth more effectively. If you want solid coverage and decent speed, these devices fit well within your needs. Let me know if you'd like more details!
Ensure your ISP allows that specific version of the third-party modem and confirm the modem is compatible with the required DOCSIS standard for your plan. Opting for a wired connection remains ideal for optimal performance. While newer Wi-Fi protocols boost bandwidth and reduce latency, a stable wired link still delivers the best online gaming or streaming experience.
Generally, anything mentioning "gaming" seems like nonsense, so I try to avoid it. I’m not very familiar with that router, but if you can... hardwiring will outperform WiFi 10 times for gaming. Latency is really annoying. Right now I’m using an Ubiquiti Edgerouter x and two Unifi Ap-AC Lite units inside my house connected via PoE, and they’re performing well. I get about 250-300 Mbps when they’re nearby. The drop-off becomes quite noticeable at 5GHz.
You're considering an upgrade because you want to ensure compatibility with your ISP's DOCSIS version. Checking their website or contacting them can help. You don't need a gaming router—any standard router will suffice for the speed you pay for. Avoid Wi-Fi 6 since it's designed for Wi-Fi, not broadband. Ethernet cables are more reliable than expensive equipment, especially if you're not in a large household. The NETGEAR Nighthawk R7000 should work well for your needs.
