Model: Noctua NH-D15 Series: Clearance series Product: Quiet performance focused design
I'm setting up my new PC in a Define 7 Compact and have a query. My setup includes an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, Noctua NH-D15, ASUS ROG Strix X570-F, GAMING S-AM4, Trident Z DDR4 3600Mhz, 16GB RAM, and a 140W PSU. The problem I face is the RAM clearance on the Noctua NH-D15. Can I replace it with a Noctua NF-F12 PWM 120mm instead? And what effect would that have on cooling performance? Thanks!
It’s easy to raise the fan a few inches to free up space, and it won’t make a big difference in temperature.
When using both fans, fitting them together with the d15 presents challenges in most cases. My Corsair 450D setup allows only one fan between the heat sinks because there isn’t enough space at the back of the case. Placing another fan front-mounted means I have to raise it higher due to RAM clearance, which then prevents me from aligning the side panel properly. This seems to be a common limitation unless you have a wider model. Even with low-profile RAM, it doesn’t solve the problem much. An alternative could be the u12a, which uses 120mm fans instead of 140s, though it might reduce cooling efficiency slightly. I’m not sure how the u12a with two fans stacks up against a d15 with one fan.
This will probably prevent him from installing his side panel. The issue seems to be with the d15 in several cases. There isn’t enough room to fit the side panel and fans in my Corsair 450D, making it hard to raise a fan unless I remove the side panel entirely.
