Modding extension cables
Modding extension cables
I have a modular psu with black cables. My new case is white, and I'm planning to convert the psu cables to white as well. I'm considering swapping the plug on one end so the extensions can be plugged directly into the psu. I already have the pin removal tools and have done this before on other psus with custom-colored plugs without any issues. I'm wondering if there are others who have done this before. The answers I've seen seem to come from people who are too afraid to try it. I don't want to be the only one who, 15-20 years ago, modified my cables by replacing plugs with UV-reactive ones because that was the norm at the time.
Shouldn't I be able to replace the plug at one end so I can connect the extensions directly to the PSU?
I prefer using sleeved extensions or a custom wire set starting from the PSU's side rather than mixing them halfway.
Consider the make and model of your PSU and its age. Avoid altering the original cables, as there are cases where sending the entire unit during an RMA could lead to blame being placed on a faulty PSU due to improper use by the end-user.
I actually wrap my own cables, using high-quality MDPC-X products. Happy to connect with another cableslever in this community! 😉
I would be very cautious about any such transformations, particularly if the aim is merely vanity or appearance. It’s not just about fear—extreme caution would be more fitting. These situations aren’t designed for DIY projects anymore. Ordering replacement parts and cables is increasingly risky; it’s more likely you’ll receive something incorrect, defective, or low quality. The main goal shifts from accuracy to completing the order quickly to generate profit. You risk not only getting the wrong item but also being unable to prove the cable was the right one, or that you didn’t make any mistakes during the process.
If you’re in a tight spot with nothing to lose, conversions might still be worth the effort.

The simplest option would be to just add the extensions, I admit. The PSU is a three-year-old EVGA supernova 650 and it's fully modular. It would really drive me nuts adding that extra cabling into the back of the case after getting everything in place. I have no doubt I can switch the pins from one ATX port to another without confusion, and I assume as long as the extensions have good quality wiring, there wouldn't be any problems. I'm still undecided at this point.
