Hey everyone, I recently assembled my first PC around a year ago and everything went smoothly overall. About two weeks ago I added a new hard drive to boost my storage capacity. After installation, the machine briefly powered on for just a second before shutting off completely. There was a strong burning odor coming from the motherboard area, but no smoke or visible damage was noticed. Since then, I've simplified everything to just the core parts—CPU, GPU, motherboard, power supply, and boot drive—and still can't get it to turn on properly. I've checked my PSU on another system and it functions correctly. Based on this, do you think the issue is with the motherboard? Could static discharge have caused a problem? This is my first attempt at troubleshooting something like this, so I'm trying to stay focused. Here are my specifications: Motherboard: MSI Gaming Plus x470 CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 GPU: Vega 64 (Stock) PSU: EVGA Supernova G3 750W Boot Drive: ADATA NVME 480Gb
I think I disconnected it (it was a week back), though I did turn off the switch at the back.
When you detected a burning odor, the next step would be to look toward the source and examine the board for any signs of damaged wiring. Have you looked into it? This would definitely confirm the issue with the board.
I verified and didn’t notice anything unusual (the PCB is black, making visibility difficult). The burning odor seemed to originate from the top section of the motherboard near the CPU. I’m expecting a new board to arrive, so we can confirm if that’s the solution. Just wanted to clarify if the lack of progress, despite a functioning PSU, suggests the issue lies with the motherboard.
