Hi, do you have any questions about portable modems or routers that support E-SIM "virtual SIMs" instead of traditional physical cards?

Affordable smartphone featuring an unlocked design and built-in eSIM, powered by a heated battery bank connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Plus one, particularly when considering those cell modem rates. A standard 5G modem costs around $500, while a used phone with similar features is about $150.

A solid 5G router offers much stronger reception compared to a phone, and it maintains hotspot functionality even after periods of inactivity. Based on your signal quality and required reliability, a phone might become inconvenient.

I spent many years relying on my cell phone as the main WAN connection. There are solutions available. The main thing needed is at least three strong 4G LTE signals, which was sufficient for playing games even in tough situations (back then there were only about 2200 rated arenas in WoW, placing the top players in the top two percent—nothing to worry about). For someone like you, if the device isn’t being used as a regular smartphone, positioning it for better reception becomes much simpler.

It's true portable routers are generally less ideal. They tend to rely on outdated tech compared to modern phones, missing features like carrier aggregation. If you value mobility, consider using your existing phone plan instead of buying a separate device.

These small hotspot gadgets might be tricky to handle during problems, especially compared to a phone with its own operating system that doesn’t need extra tools for fixing issues.

They appear to be constructed very affordably, which makes the operating system handle far fewer tasks. We notice the same issue with consumer routers—budget models can be quite disappointing.

It’s being asked because using an e-SIM offers flexibility and compatibility with modern devices.
