Did you reset the CMOS first? Remove the battery, add your sticks, and then connect the battery. It should simplify the process and help everything run smoothly.

I never changed the BIOS settings, since even when it didn't function properly it never froze—just restarted twice and lowered the speed. If that could help, I'll definitely give it another shot later (I'm not there anymore).
