I received a 32GB stick from a friend for Christmas—it was a thoughtful present. I already have a 1x16GB stick in my PC, which came with the original build a few years ago. After upgrading the CPU and GPU, I'm wondering if mixing these two will work. My current PC uses a specialist brand RAM stick that's at least 16GB, while the new one is a 1x32GB Corsair Vengeance 3600. Both use DDR4.

It will function properly, though it will operate at the pace of the slowest DIMM. (For instance, if your current RAM is 3600 and the new modules are 2400, both modules will run at 2400.)

Check the system requirements. Plugging it in should work and boost performance. Currently with one stick, you're using single channel; adding another gives partial dual channel even at lower clock speeds, doubling the width. Use CPU-Z to see the RAM module specs. In the SPD tab, review the slots dropdown to confirm your setup.

CPU model appears to be Ryzen 7 5800X. Motherboard seems to be an Asus Prime 450M-K. I can't verify right now, but based on memory it looks accurate.

It could function or fail. Make sure to reset the CMOS once you install the second stick.

Consider using the single 32 stick for better speeds, or test both to see which works best. The original recommendation was around 2400, and you could match your purchase to that speed. You might also upgrade from your current setup if needed.

Dual channels are consistently superior to single ones. I’d test the setup you mentioned first—it could work, fail, or perform adequately. Once you understand the situation, decide accordingly. Matching pairs remain the optimal choice.

Combining RAM carries some risk because of variations in the integrated circuits used and sometimes different modules won't work well together due to differences in timing requirements or voltage needs. I'm not suggesting it won't function, but avoiding problems means getting a compatible set whenever possible.
