Hi there,
I have a query regarding the Bios 317 update for my ASUS Vivobook F556UV-DM196T.
On the official ASUS website I can locate the latest BIOS information, which lists version 317.
My concern is that there’s no clear detail about the modifications made.
I’m planning to upgrade my RAM, as it currently has 4GB built-in and two additional slots. The original capacity was up to 8GB, but many F556U models max out at 12GB. I’m wondering if a BIOS update has adjusted this limit for my specific model.
Additionally, it seems difficult to find a 2x8GB configuration since only 2x4GB options are available. I understand they might run at the lowest speed, but I’m worried about compatibility if the total GB exceeds the intended size.
For clarity, could someone provide a changelog for that BIOS? Also, I’d like to know if it’s possible for the system to run 2x8GB given the total GB limit.
Looking forward to your guidance,
Gr

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
I'm having trouble finding any details about the updates.
This isn't the first time Asus has released a BIOS update without explaining the changes. Maybe they're focusing on security or performance improvements.
I'm planning to upgrade my RAM. It currently has 4GB 'onboard the MoBo' and two extra slots.
Are you certain your laptop has two SO-DIMM slots? A search suggests it should have just one. I think you might have used CPU-Z to check your motherboard slots.
Just a note, if you're searching for RAM for that...

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
My problem is that there is no information whatsoever on what the changes are.
This isn't the first time Asus have parsed a BIOS update without any mention of what's been changed. Perhaps it's to address security or performance issues.
I actually want to upgrade my RAM. it has 4GB 'onboard the MoBo and 2 extra ram slots.
Are you sure about the laptop having two SO-DIMM slots? Google search tells me that your laptop should have one ram slot. I'm guessing you used something along the lines of CPU-Z to tell you how many slots you've got on your motherboard. I would advise disassembling your laptop and seeing if you have a slot to begin with.
Just an FYI, if you're looking for ram for that laptop, you can't go beyond DDR4-2133MHz due to the integrated memory controller on your processor.

You're welcome for your kind words and the prompt response.
Confirmed about ASUS, yes you're correct. The laptop only has one SO-DIMM slot, which explains the 8GB limit.
For RAM options, you should avoid DDR4-2133MHz due to the built-in memory controller.
Appreciate the helpful details, I'll choose the right model and find a suitable RAM.
Thanks a lot!
