Minor lag in video games
Hi everyone, my setup includes a Ryzen 3600 with auto overclock, running on Trident Z Neo CL18 at 3600MHz. I'm using Asus Prime B550 MK II with the latest BIOS, and Gigabyte 3070 OC Gaming drivers. Windows 10 is up to date. Previously, I had 3200MHz CL16 RAM which didn't work well with my CPU; after switching to the new 3600MHz RAM, stuttering has decreased but it still occurs occasionally. I've adjusted timings and reached CL16, where benchmarks improve though stutter remains. Games run smoothly overall, but there are moments of lag—like inventory opening stutters. Any tips or recommendations?
You mention games but aren't clear on which ones or how they affect performance. In general, if your system is CPU-bound, stuttering makes sense. I’d suggest capping the frame rate to stabilize FPS. Some games also have settings that strain the CPU heavily—adjusting those can help reduce the problem.
It happens anytime you use a PC, though it’s most obvious during gaming sessions. Open-world titles tend to cause issues, while linear smaller-world games usually work okay. Borderlands 3 often stutters when loading large files. Chivalry 2 may lag on high-player or large-sized servers. Battlefield V functions well unless DirectX 12 is enabled, then it stutters on crowded servers with many players. I’ve tried capping frame rates, but it still causes stuttering. It appears to slow down whenever something new loads—animations, sounds, or textures—though once loaded it resumes smoothly.
Are you experiencing problems with a hard drive? Also, what’s your RAM consumption like? It seems like you might be dealing with pagefile issues, which typically occur when RAM runs low or allocation isn’t working properly. Using a solid-state drive can reduce the impact of pagefiling since it allows faster loading of data that isn’t stored in RAM. Still, occasional stuttering in Windows often stems from loading from a hard drive or similar situations.
It might be that the Infinity Fabric and Memory Controller timings aren't matching, so it's good to share what ZenTimings says.
The tCL 18 matches the DOCP profile my motherboard suggested. The tCL 16 is a custom build I created. It offers significantly reduced latency and quicker write speeds. Later, I optimized it further to 16-19-19-39.
I’m not familiar with many of these topics, but checking what people believe about tRDWR feels quite extensive.
