She gave me this very old laptop with an Intel Celeron and just 2GB RAM. She suggested I reinstall its operating system—was Win XP Professional—and asked if anyone could help with a lighter Windows version that uses less memory and processing power. I wasn’t sure about other OS options like Lubuntu, since she doesn’t know how to use them. P.S. The main tasks will be saving and editing word documents, browsing the web, checking email, and writing tests.
no such compact edition of Windows exists that Microsoft created... which is why Chromebooks found their place. Yet Windows 10 still functions, though it won't be a pleasant experience... (switching the hard drive to an SSD would make it feel completely different)
There isn’t a lightweight Windows option for PCs or laptops... WinRT is limited to ARM chips. You might try installing Windows 7, but be aware it could run a bit slower, and the hardware is quite old. I don’t suggest using Windows 10 either.
It seems you're questioning the value of upgrading your setup. A modern laptop like a Lenovo IdeaPad 100S or Dell Inspiron P24T offers a significantly better experience compared to running Windows 10 or 7 on such devices. The price of a new retail Windows license is roughly equivalent to the cost of these laptops.
Usually I suggest Windows 7, but it’s becoming quite outdated and will stop receiving support soon. Windows 10 might be a better fit, though it won’t run as smoothly as before. You could try turning off background applications. Please don’t use the toggle in the attached image—it may cause issues. Instead, manage apps individually. You can also set it to “best performance” to ensure smooth operation. If it remains slow, consider switching to a Linux distribution (perhaps one similar to Windows?) or upgrade your hardware. This should be the simplest solution.
Thanks for the idea. She already has a laptop, but she received one from school despite her earlier refusal. Once she got it, she wanted something practical for real use, not just keeping it. P.S. I intend to download Windows via torrent since the license fee is higher than the device itself.
I considered using version 7 and improving performance (since my laptop is slow and I’m keen on PCs), but didn’t expect it to work well with it. Appreciate the reply.
Windows 10 supports Atom processors, though their speed is still superior to older CPUs like the Pentium 4. It might be wise to consider upgrading. What’s the age of your device? If it’s over a decade old, new hardware could be beneficial.
