I’m not very familiar with technology, so I need assistance with my computer. Recently I upgraded mine to a Ryzen 9 5900X with an RTX 4080, a B550 Aorus Pro AC, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, an EVGA GT 1000W PSU, a Kraken Z63 water cooler, and a 1080p monitor at 144Hz. After the upgrade I experienced significant performance problems that I resolved by updating the BIOS, turning on XMP and PBO, and refreshing graphics drivers. This largely solved issues such as achieving around 90 FPS in Apex Legends with low settings before making those changes. Once those adjustments were done, my performance improved noticeably, though I still face some challenges. For example, my previous Ryzen 5 5600X and RTX 2060 performed better than my new setup in certain games. When using the GeForce Experience overlay (I’m not sure how reliable it is), my GPU and CPU stayed at only 15-20% usage even during high graphics settings. I’m puzzled why my CPU and GPU aren’t reaching their potential, especially after overclocking with PBO. Watching benchmark videos shows lower-end systems are outperforming mine, and I don’t see close matches. What’s odd is that after running UserBenchmark it reports both my CPU and GPU are doing better than expected, delivering impressive scores. I’m not sure how a computer functions beyond the basics. I’ve searched online but haven’t found any solutions, so maybe I’ll look here for help. I plan to upgrade to at least a 1440p monitor, possibly even 4K. I’m aware that the 4080 struggles to hit 144Hz at 1080p when paired with the 2060, which felt unusual. Edited February 3, 2023 by Shrikefire
You purchased a strong 4K GPU for 1080p at 144Hz, paired with a CPU built for office tasks rather than gaming. The 4080 is powerful, but the 5900X offers better gaming performance, and the 3200MHZ RAM isn't doing much. A 5800X3D would have been a better choice. I'm not sure if 4080 models suffer from issues like 3080s-3090s; 1080p performance drops when CPU is weak, but it improves at higher resolutions. Try rendering the game in 4K through Nvidia's DSR in the control panel to check if performance and CPU/GPU usage improve.
How are your temperatures? It seems the PS might be throttling due to excessive heat. Are there any unusual programs running on your system that could be draining power?
Did you adjust Windows power settings to high and NVIDIA control panel to high? Verify there are no FPS limits in the NVIDIA control panel and within game settings. The other concern is running on a 1080p display—consider upgrading to a 1440p monitor for better performance. Make sure VSync is disabled and ensure your previous PC had more powerful hardware, which caused it to rely heavily on CPU/GPU. A better monitor would improve overall usage.
It turns out a recent update to the windows update process reset my power settings to their default. I fixed it again, and performance has improved significantly. Appreciate your assistance!
I’m still trying to wrap my head around this. It seems like I fixed the power setting and it worked. The idea that the 5900x matches the 5600x performance isn’t quite right for me. After the fix, my CPU is running much smoother than the old 5600x. I was getting significantly more frames—sometimes over 60 extra in certain games—and it stayed stable, especially during recording. That makes sense for the 5900x since I bought it mainly for recording and streaming. I also didn’t realize I’d be moving to a higher resolution soon, so I was aware of the 1080p challenge. Thanks for your reply!
You identified the issue clearly—it’s a CPU limitation. Monitor GPU activity during gameplay. A fast CPU replacement would help, such as a 5700X3D or 5800X3D. Also consider boosting detail settings.
