Minimal GPU demand with strong CPU performance
You don't need hyperthreading for gaming, and I believe it can actually be detrimental in that context. I'm seeing solid FPS across all titles at 1080P using the same CPU, but my GPU is significantly weaker. It seems the issue might be related to memory configuration—possibly single-channel or mismatched settings, which is supported by the low frame rates. The 9700 remains a strong CPU and should stay that way for another three years.
Don't know where you heard that one from... if the OP is running with just a single stick, YES he is going to have a big performance penalty as a result.
Games are increasingly using more than one processor, along with background programs, which raises the number of processes the CPU handles. RAM also plays a key role, affecting performance based on available memory and system setup.
