Okay so recently I found a really good deal on a desktop online that I couldn't pass up. For the curious I paid $650 for an ATX tower, complete with a corsair 750w, gskill 8x2, Pentium g5400, and a GTX 1080Ti founders edition with an evga hybrid liquid cooler. I mostly use this rig for tycoon/sim type games, or less demanding applications like clone hero, hotline miami, etc. However. I do like to stream from time to time, and it seems most people like watch Warzone. I enjoy CoD, but when running it on my setup, I usually only run about 40-50 fps on max(ish) settings. Also, when streaming, I seem to drop frames like crazy. I figured it definitely has to do with my underpowered CPU, and to further confirm my suspicions, the dropped frames issue seems to have been alleviated after enabling hardware encoding on OBS. Anyway. Here's my main question. Would upgrading my CPU help my frame rate dilemma in warzone and other high demand games? Cyberpunk seems to struggle as well. T.I.A. ~sleazyboi
Pentium G5400 features 2 cores and 4 threads running at 3.7 GHz. This speed might not meet the requirements for current games. The good news is it belongs to the Coffee Lake line, which could allow for future upgrades. Check the motherboard model using CPU-Z or the motherboard section; this will show compatibility details. You may also need a firmware update, and if possible, consider replacing it with a more powerful CPU in the same range to improve performance. Upgrading cooling might be necessary as well. What cooler is installed?
Gigabyte Z370m DS3H requires upgrades for future compatibility, especially when transitioning to a different CPU architecture or switching to Ryzen processors.
Have you explored using NVENC for streaming? It directs processing to the GPU encoder rather than relying on the system's integrated graphics.
The motherboard can handle 8th and 9th generation CPUs up to the 9900K and similar models, meaning you probably just need a CPU upgrade, maybe a better cooler, and you'll see significant performance gains. How much do you value this? It's a dual-core processor, which I believe is a more pressing concern even when the encoding offloads some work to the GPU.
Z370M DS3H (rev. 1.0) Compatibility | Motherboard - GIGABYTE U.S.A. These are the processors that work with this board after BIOS updates. I’m not familiar with the motherboard, but from the DS3H’s past it seems to have limited VRMs, so I wouldn’t recommend an i9 on it.
I noticed several hardware choices in the OBS settings before. If the GPU encoders aren’t working, adding more cores might help. I usually don’t suggest an i5-8400, but finding a decent model on eBay at a reasonable price could be ideal for your needs.
