Hi, I’m evaluating whether buying this used thin client on eBay makes sense. It’s running Windows XP Embedded, which HP offers for download, and it costs just $22. You’re thinking about setting it up at your grandmother’s house so you can connect via OpenVPN Connect and have an icon for any device in your home. The main limitation is that the specs are limited enough for basic tasks like Windows XP and RDP, but not for modern applications. Considering these factors, would it be a worthwhile investment?

It could function once the Windows XP Embedded image is unusable. Mostly I intend to link it to my home network via a VPN, then use RDP to access one of my computers.

It doesn't seem worthwhile. I don't understand the benefit. It's going to be quite slow. You'd be better off using your desktop, maybe a used ThinkPad for around fifty dollars, which would be much quicker. Also, avoid Windows XP—it's a major security risk.

I keep reminding myself you really want it, but then I switch my mind right away. I’m also checking out a Windows 7 version, though I’m still unsure.

Thin clients are really compact devices. If I were following your approach, I’d end up with a powerful PC. Around $100 or higher, you can find a Dell Inspiron 410 Zino HD that doesn’t use embedded Windows, and its RAM and hard drive can be expanded.

Legacy thin devices lag significantly, even surpassing a Raspberry Pi. Consider upgrading to a ThinkPad or Exlease.

I'm happy I haven't bought it yet. It gives me time to consider before making a decision. I also have an HP Stream 7 Tablet that needs fixing and a LG Sunset that requires a new screen. Spending money on things I use more often makes sense.

That's correct. However, if you choose the path of a traditional thin client, consider using Linux Mint or Xubuntu. Linux is ideal for servers.

I intend to link it with your home network first, then connect it to a computer. That’s essentially their intended purpose, and that’s what I planned to do.
