Attempting to start a live Ubuntu CD or Mint USB often displays the same error image. This behavior appears consistent across different distributions, unlike Live USBs which seem more stable. When trying to reinstall Ubuntu 14.04 from a USB, selecting it usually triggers a kernel panic. Regarding Macs, their update processes differ significantly from Linux systems.
Hey there, wondering about NTLDR? Which Windows version are you attempting to install? Look into your BIOS configuration. If you're using the Gigabyte motherboard linked here, verify your DVD drive is configured for EFI or MBR. You may need to switch to MBR if you're trying to boot Windows XP, since it doesn't support EFI. I believe Windows Vista was the point when EFI became available... though I'm not sure. My reasoning comes from comparing your Z77 board to the Gigabyte Z68—my Z68 only supports EFI via DVDs, and USB boots to MBR by default. Macs update smoothly, but upgrading from Snow Leopard to Yosemite usually requires purchasing new hardware. I don't recall updating Macs much lately, especially since OS X changes aren't drastic compared to Windows transitions like XP to Vista or Vista to 7.
Your HDD is running in Legacy mode. Would you like to try ACHI instead?
