I just installed the Tekkit Launcher and played a bit of Hekkit for about 20 minutes. Then it popped up an "Out of Memory" message asking me to free up more RAM. I checked the launcher’s settings in the top-right gear and tried increasing the RAM allocation, but the maximum was only up to 1GB. In fact, I have 8GB of 1866mhz Kingston HyperX Fury RAM installed.

No, I don't have 64-bit Windows Java installed. It seems you're using a 32-bit version, which limits the system to about 1 gigabyte of RAM.
