I've explored the topic a bit and still found nothing concrete. I play Modded Minecraft regularly—seriously, is there a group or event I can join? My 8-year-old son and I enjoy it a lot during our dad weekends. I'm trying to figure out how to set up a Minecraft server using an old Windows Server 2012 R2 machine I own. I thought the software might be available for download, but from what I understand, it likely requires payment. I’m unsure if that’s necessary, though. My goal is to create a server where both of us can connect and play together in the same world. I was considering getting headsets so we can communicate and build our environment while having fun. However, I’m not sure about the technical side—especially whether the server will actually work with something that simple (HP Proliant ML350 G6). Do you have any experience with this setup? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ryan.

You can simply download and execute the server software without cost. Find a suitable suggest server for your modbacks. I usually run on Linux because it's quicker and I'm more comfortable with it, though Windows is fine too. Just note that the server will consume a significant amount of power if it runs continuously.

I need to review the suggested specifications. Yes, the server will also be used for a few other smaller tasks, so it will definitely run. Appreciate your feedback!

I concur with electronics guy man dude. Mojang offers free server software to play the game. It works on any computer. I tried Minecraft on my XP machine with a friend using this method. One thing to note is LAN servers are straightforward to set up without much in-game configuration. I’ll check if my friend has any thoughts. @Laggger164
