Mid-range processor unit
Hey there! I remember when the 5820k was popular—back then I wasn’t sure about today’s tech. I’m planning a build for my mom who handles a lot of office work, and while I know she doesn’t need an i7, I’m not sure which i5 models are best or what AMD options look like. Even if you could suggest some chipsets to compare, it would be super helpful!
For optimal performance, the Ryzen 1600AF (essentially a 2600) paired with any B450 motherboard or a Ryzen 3600 + B450 MAX board delivers strong results. If you prefer Intel, a 9600K setup works well with a more affordable Z390 board. Note: The advice about motherboards was largely omitted. Depending on your requirements, the 1600AF offers solid value and good performance for certain tasks. Otherwise, an AMD APU such as the 2200G or 3200G would be ideal.
If she avoids video-heavy tasks needing a powerful GPU, consider a Ryzen APU like the 3400G (its Vega 11 graphics match a GT 1030). Pair it with a solid B450 board—either the MSI B450-A PRO MAX or the B450M PRO-VDH MAX. For dedicated GPUs that outperform GT 1030/Vega 11, go for a Ryzen 1600AF/2600 along with a quality B450 board.
Ryzen 1600 "AF" refers to AMD producing the Ryzen 5 1600 using the 12nm process, essentially a 2600 rebranded. It’s generally more affordable than the 2600, offering cost savings. Make sure you’re purchasing the updated model with a SKU ending in “AF” instead of “AE.” You can find a detailed video on this topic here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRO_AUdmfis
