Office 2003 stands out as the top choice in my view. With the compatibility pack for .docx files, you're in the clear.

Security concerns aren<|pad|> can be addressed by the operating system itself. If you're not using it, simply removing it is an option.

I wouldn't be overly concerned, though you might end up using OpenOffice if you're willing to try that.
