Office 365 offers its own direction, which is acceptable. For example, if you run a business, it can handle your emails and office applications... useful but not the most economical option. The benefit is always having the newest software, though the drawback remains the subscription cost. I believe they will shift more toward this model in the future. Office 2010 or 2013 are worth considering, as you can purchase standalone disks which might save you money next month. Alternatively, if you don’t require the latest document productivity features, try LibreOffice—it’s open source and free. I used it for years before obtaining Office 2013 through work.

Open office seems like a great option and it's completely free. We didn't realize we missed this before, and I'm glad it's available.

I use Libreoffice, you have no excuse to not to. Don't bother with OpenOffice, just go to Libreoffice right away.

The main issue with both Libre and open office is that they feel a bit outdated in terms of features. While this isn’t a major drawback for most, it might matter to some users. Overall, they function adequately and meet their needs.

I never purchased Office, it's similar to getting WinRAR.

OpenOffice is an older version, but after Oracle supported the LibreOffice initiative it has performed well, especially with graphical improvements and even 3D models. Not every advanced feature available in the newest Windows Office versions is present, but it still handles most tasks effectively—particularly for school use. The only situation where I wouldn’t choose LibreOffice is for professional documents intended for printing in books or magazines, since it doesn’t offer sufficient customization and can lead to costly surprises.

Ouch OP. Consider using OpenOffice or LibreOffice instead. Hope Microsoft doesn’t turn Windows 9 into a paid subscription system like they did with Office.
