I bought a Blue Snowball iCE and found it problematic when used with a mechanical keyboard—it makes a lot of noise and picks up sounds from other rooms. Are there any tools or settings in Windows 8 that can fix this issue?

I usually steer clear of desktop microphones because they tend to capture keystrokes easily unless you use a specialized mic on a shock mount. I don’t have software recommendations, but I’m curious to find something that could prevent accidentally harming a friend during voice chat.

Several VoIP applications include built-in noise reduction capabilities. I’m aware Mumble and Skype offer this, but they’re quite rudimentary and not very effective. The most reliable approach remains minimizing ambient noise in the environment.

skype is shit though, if there's no talking it progressively gets more and more sensitive and creates white noise and picks up every little thing that it can find even if the microphone normally wouldn't pick it up

Bring it a bit closer, reduce the volume and enable voice commands or push-to-talk. There aren't any such settings available on Windows, and even if they existed, it probably wouldn't eliminate all the background noise you mentioned.

I've relocated it to the nearest feasible spot without obstructing my monitor view or introducing further issues.
