I finally got through the really long intro and ended up in Afghanistan or something. *spoilers, you go to Afghanistan after the tutorial mission in this 4-year-old mainstream game*.
What about that guy? And why was there a kid with a gas mask flying around? Is it the psycho mantis thing? I haven’t played those old MGS games either—I think I should try. The demo for 4 was actually fun on PS3.
I had no idea what was happening at all. Plus, I don’t get why it’s from the 80s with all this high-tech stuff.

You need to experience MGS1, MGS3, MGS Peace Walker, and ideally the original Metal Gear to truly understand MSG:V. Otherwise, you'll be confused by everything.
The game aims to connect the Big Boss timeline with the Solid Snake timeline.
That's what Kojima intends.

This will help.  please note however, that MGSV takes place somewhere in the middle, so scroll past that to avoid spoilers (there is also a button at the bottom-right to hide it)

Someone claimed the big boss was a clone or similar, which is confusing for me. I think I’ll purchase around eight MGs games to understand better.

The last game isn't the final one in time order.

Flaming guy is the primary villain in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The storyline is extremely confusing and required numerous YouTube videos to fully grasp.

I discovered the story of a particular MGS game easily once I started playing it, watching all the cutscenes and listening to the codec calls. There could still be some questions left to answer, but they aren’t really crucial to the plot.
For that game.
The issue is that later games expand on earlier ones, making points that weren’t important for the initial version significant in later titles. For example, the Liquid’s arm on Ocelot was a minor detail in MGS2 but a major one in MGS4.
